WU_S_REBOOT_REQUIRED

WU_S_REBOOT_REQUIRED is a success status indicating that an update has reached the point where a system restart is required to complete installation. It does not by itself mean that the update failed.

Diagnostic discriminator: Check the pending-restart state and the update result after Windows restarts. This success status is cleared by completing the installation lifecycle; changing endpoint, proxy, or transport settings is unrelated unless a later operation reports a separate network error.

What to check for WU_S_REBOOT_REQUIRED

  • Schedule a restart and verify the update state after Windows starts again.
  • Avoid starting another conflicting installation while a mandatory restart is pending.
  • For managed deployments, distinguish a reboot-required result from an installation error in reporting.
