VDS_E_DISK_NOT_IMPORTED

VDS_E_DISK_NOT_IMPORTED This HRESULT reports a failed member of a dynamic-disk import/migration. It is more specific than VDS_E_IMPORT_SET_INCOMPLETE: the latter rejects an incomplete input set, while VDS_E_DISK_NOT_IMPORTED says a disk in the import source pack did not make it through the import.

What the VDS state means

Foreign disks are offline to configuration and I/O until they are imported into the machine primary disk group. The VDS foreign-disk procedure therefore treats pack membership as a coordinated operation. A failed member can leave the caller needing to re-enumerate packs and disks to understand the actual post-operation state rather than assuming the whole pack rolled back unchanged.

Diagnostic focus

  • Identify the exact disk GUID that was not imported and compare it with the source pack membership recorded before the operation.
  • Check disk visibility, path/controller state, and dynamic-disk status; a disk can be physically present yet unavailable or missing from the provider view.
  • After the failure, query packs and disk properties again. Do not assume all source disks remain foreign or all successful members joined the target pack.
  • Avoid cleaning the failed disk until the import topology and any dependent spanned, striped, or mirrored volumes have been documented.
