VDS_E_NO_VOLUME_LAYOUT
VDS_E_NO_VOLUME_LAYOUT This HRESULT says the volume layout is unavailable. A VDS volume can contain one or more plexes, and volume operations such as extend, shrink, break plex, remove plex, or delete depend on knowing that topology. Without layout information, the provider cannot reliably map the logical volume to the underlying members and extents.
What the VDS state means
The error is more serious than incomplete display properties. IVdsVolume::QueryPlexes and the plex property model describe type, status, health, transition state, size, stripe size, and member count. If the layout cannot be retrieved, callers should not infer a simple one-disk volume from the drive letter or volume GUID path.
Diagnostic focus
- Capture the volume GUID and containing pack, then query plex enumeration and provider events to identify where layout retrieval fails.
- Avoid extend, shrink, delete, or repair decisions based only on the mounted file-system view while the VDS layout is unavailable.
- Check for missing disks and pack-offline conditions because VDS volume status depends on member availability and pack state.
- After correcting device/provider availability, refresh and reacquire the volume object; do not assume a previously cached layout becomes valid automatically.
