VDS_E_FAULT_TOLERANT_DISKS_NOT_SUPPORTED
VDS uses fault-tolerant volume types for mirrored and RAID-5 layouts, both of which maintain redundant data. This HRESULT is broader than the mirror-only and RAID-5-only capability codes: the platform does not support the fault-tolerant disk configuration required by the operation. The message is about operating-system capability, not an individual disk reporting poor health.
Why this state matters
Identify the exact volume type requested and query VDS service capabilities. Then record the operating system and provider. Do not replace disks or run file-system repair merely because the HRESULT contains “fault tolerant.” If the feature is unavailable, the storage design must change or the workload must use a supported platform/technology. Existing hardware RAID redundancy is invisible to this VDS software-volume contract.
Diagnostic focus
- Record the requested VDS volume type and whether it requires fault-tolerant binding.
- Query service mirror and RAID-5 support flags.
- Confirm the operating-system configuration and VDS provider type.
- Distinguish VDS software fault tolerance from hardware RAID and Storage Spaces resiliency.
