VDS_E_READONLY
VDS_E_READONLY means VDS or the provider reports the volume as read-only. The state can come from a VDS volume flag, disk-level read-only status, partition attributes, media characteristics or an underlying provider policy.
Locate the layer enforcing read-only state
- Read both volume flags and disk flags rather than checking only the filesystem.
- Determine whether the state is temporary, provider-enforced or required by the volume role.
- Clear supported flags through VDS and then re-query properties before retrying.
A successful flag clear does not guarantee writable storage if hardware, SAN or filesystem layers remain read-only. Conversely, directly changing a partition attribute behind VDS can leave its cached state inconsistent. Preserve the exact operation and object properties in diagnostics so read-only policy is not confused with failed disk I/O.
