VDS_E_PARTITION_MSR

The Microsoft Reserved partition is a GPT partition reserved for Windows storage management. It is not an ordinary data volume and does not exist to hold a user file system. VDS explicitly classifies MSR partitions among partitions that are not volumes, and many advanced configuration operations reject them with this HRESULT.

Why this state matters

Confirm the partition type GUID and disk style before acting. The MSR can be small and have no drive letter, but size or invisibility alone is not enough to identify it. Avoid formatting, mounting, or repurposing it as a workaround. If an operation needs user-data storage, select a basic-data partition or create the appropriate layout through supported disk-management tooling.

Diagnostic focus

  • Verify the disk is GPT and the partition type is the Microsoft Reserved type.
  • Confirm the failing method is valid for ordinary data partitions but not MSR.
  • Do not assign a file system or access path to the MSR as a diagnostic step.
  • Review the whole GPT layout before deleting or resizing reserved partitions.
