VDS_E_BOOT_DISK
This HRESULT is a role-based protection. The VDS disk flag VDS_DF_BOOT_DISK identifies the disk that hosts the current boot volume. That is different from VDS_DF_SYSTEM_DISK and VDS_DF_BOOT_FROM_DISK; VDS exposes separate flags because Windows boot files, the running Windows volume, and firmware boot selection are not necessarily represented by one conceptual role.
Why this state matters
When a disk-attribute operation is rejected, the correct response is to verify the role rather than force the lower-level change. A cloned disk, SAN remapping, or multi-disk boot configuration can make assumptions based on disk number unreliable. Preserve the VDS flags and volume association in diagnostics before planning an offline maintenance environment.
