VDS_E_BOOT_PAGEFILE_DRIVE_LETTER
This HRESULT protects the access-path identity of two active system roles: the current boot volume and a volume hosting the paging file. VDS access paths are not the same as volume identity, but changing a drive letter on these volumes can invalidate assumptions used by the running system and services. The block applies to assigning as well as removing the drive letter.
Why this state matters
Before treating the result as a generic mount-point error, identify the role of the selected volume and the exact requested access path. IVdsService::QueryDriveLetters reports which drive letters are in use, while VDS disk flags expose boot/pagefile roles at disk level. A free letter does not make the operation legal when the target volume is protected.
Diagnostic focus
- Log the target volume ID, current access paths, and the drive-letter change requested.
- Confirm whether the containing disk has BOOT_DISK or PAGEFILE_DISK role flags.
- Query drive-letter occupancy separately; this HRESULT is not the same as
VDS_E_DRIVE_LETTER_NOT_FREE. - Plan boot/pagefile relocation through supported system configuration before retrying the VDS access-path change.
