VDS_E_DISK_HAS_BANDS
VDS_E_DISK_HAS_BANDS appears when VDS attempts a basic-to-dynamic conversion on a disk that contains security-enabled bands. The term is associated with protected or hardware-encrypted storage regions, not ordinary partition extents or dynamic-volume striping.
Inspect encryption state before conversion
- Enumerate volumes and query BitLocker or hardware-encryption protection and conversion status.
- Back up recovery information before changing any protector or encryption policy.
- Complete decryption or use a supported non-dynamic layout instead of forcing the VDS conversion.
Deleting drive letters or dismounting volumes does not remove encryption bands. Do not clean the disk merely to bypass this error unless complete data destruction is intended. The dynamic-disk model is legacy and Microsoft recommends newer storage-management technologies, so a redesign is usually safer than altering protected storage solely to satisfy VDS.
