TRUST_E_MALFORMED_SIGNATURE
TRUST_E_MALFORMED_SIGNATURE means that the signature data could not be parsed or does not have the expected structure for the trust operation. It differs from a digest mismatch: verification cannot reliably reach the normal integrity comparison.
Separate format failure from trust policy
- Retain the original object and collect its hash before replacing it, because malformed signature data can indicate a damaged or incorrectly produced artifact.
- Check whether the signing tool, packaging step, or transport modified the signature container after signing.
- Use a current Windows trust API or a signing diagnostic tool to inspect the embedded or catalog signature.
Do not bypass this result by treating the object as unsigned unless the application policy explicitly permits unsigned content.
