WINBIO_E_UNKNOWN_ID is returned by an identification operation when the captured sample does not match any enrolled identity in the selected database. It is a result of matching, not necessarily a sensor or driver failure.
What to check
- Confirm that the expected person has an enrollment in the database and that the correct sensor pool is being used.
- Check sample quality and repeat capture if the reader reports a poor or partial sample.
- For an application, distinguish an unknown identity from an API failure and offer an alternate authentication path.
