SCARD_E_NOT_READY
What SCARD_E_NOT_READY means
SCARD_E_NOT_READY (0x80100010) means the reader or smart card is not ready to accept commands. It describes device or card readiness in the smart-card stack, not a general authentication failure.
What to check
- Record the reader name, card-presence state, protocol or connection state, and the smart-card API that returned the HRESULT.
- Correlate the result with card insertion or removal, reader reset, reconnect, service restart, and any operation already in progress.
- Verify whether the same reader becomes ready without changing credentials or certificate policy.
Recovery
Wait for or restore the reader/card state required by the command, then retry through the normal smart-card connection lifecycle. Repeated authentication changes will not fix a reader that has not reached a command-ready state.
