WU_E_METADATA_FETCH_CONFIG
WU_E_METADATA_FETCH_CONFIG means the client could not retrieve configuration that is required before metadata signatures can be checked. This is a metadata-security dependency, not a content-download failure.
What to check
- Check the earlier network and server-selection entries in
WindowsUpdate.logfor the endpoint and underlying transport error. - For managed devices, confirm that the configured WSUS or intranet update service is reachable and serving a complete, current catalog.
- Do not make a TLS-inspecting proxy a workaround: Microsoft documents that Windows Update metadata connections use certificate pinning and should pass without interception.
