WU_E_SELFUPDATE_SKIP_ON_FAILURE means the agent skipped another self-update attempt after earlier failures. This prevents an endless repeat of the same unsuccessful update sequence.
What to check
- Find the earlier self-update failure in
WindowsUpdate.log; this code is a consequence, not the original error. - For current Windows versions, use the normal Windows servicing path instead of seeking an old standalone WUA package.
- Check whether management policy or an obsolete update source prevents the agent from obtaining the required component update.
