FVE_E_VOLUME_NOT_BOUND

FVE_E_VOLUME_NOT_BOUND means that the specified data volume has no auto-unlock association on the current computer. Auto-unlock is a per-computer configuration for eligible data volumes, not a general replacement for an unlock protector.

How to investigate

  • Confirm that the intended drive is a BitLocker-protected data volume and that it is already unlocked before changing auto-unlock settings.
  • Check the operating-system volume and the local auto-unlock configuration; moving a data drive to another computer does not carry the association with it.
  • Keep a separate recovery method available because auto-unlock may not be available in every boot or recovery scenario.
