WHV_E_UNKNOWN_CAPABILITY

Windows Hypervisor Platform features must be discovered at runtime

WHV_E_UNKNOWN_CAPABILITY is the defined result when WHvGetCapability is called with a capability code the installed Windows Hypervisor Platform does not recognize. Building against a newer Windows SDK does not guarantee that an older host implements every enum value in that header.

A virtualization stack should use capability discovery to select optional exits, processor features, memory behavior and architecture-specific functions. Falling back safely is preferable to assuming that an unknown query means the hypervisor is generally absent.

Evidence and corrective action

  • Log the numeric WHV_CAPABILITY_CODE and the Windows build that handled the query.
  • Treat the corresponding optional feature as unavailable on this host.
  • Query WHvCapabilityCodeHypervisorPresent separately before concluding that no hypervisor is running.
  • Guard newer capability codes by runtime version or feature detection rather than compile-time headers alone.
  • Do not reinterpret the output buffer when the query itself failed.
