ERROR_SPACES_DRIVE_SECTOR_SIZE_INVALID
Sector compatibility is a pool-level storage-format requirement
ERROR_SPACES_DRIVE_SECTOR_SIZE_INVALID appears when a physical disk's reported sector characteristics cannot be used by the pool. Logical and physical sector sizes affect how Storage Spaces lays out metadata and data; raw capacity alone does not make a drive eligible.
The error can surface while adding a disk or while constructing a pool from devices with incompatible characteristics. Reformatting a volume above the disk does not change the sector sizes reported by the hardware and storage stack.
What to compare on every candidate disk
- Inspect logical and physical sector sizes through the Storage Management API.
- Compare the new drive with disks already accepted into the pool.
- Check controller, firmware, and enclosure translation of 512e or 4Kn devices.
- Ensure the disk is exposed directly rather than through an incompatible abstraction.
- Remove stale partitions only after confirming that sector size, not ownership, is the blocker.
- Do not expect NTFS or ReFS formatting options to repair physical-sector incompatibility.
