DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED
What DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED means
DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED (0x887A0004) means the requested DXGI or Direct3D functionality is not supported by the selected device or driver. The important question is which capability the failing API requested, not whether DirectX is generally installed.
What to check
- Record the exact API and arguments that returned the HRESULT, the adapter LUID, driver version, requested feature level, formats, flags, and swap-chain/output parameters that apply to that call.
- Query the device and adapter capabilities and compare them with the requested feature. Retrying the identical unsupported request will not make the capability appear.
- When device creation fails, test only feature levels and options the installed adapter/driver reports as supported; if the application supports a documented fallback, select it explicitly.
- Do not treat this code as
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED: it identifies unsupported functionality rather than a device that was lost after creation.
