STATUS_MESSAGE_LOST

The ALPC message can no longer be retrieved

This status describes a message-lifetime failure rather than malformed payload data. The message may have been canceled, consumed, discarded during port teardown, or invalidated by a racing receive path before the current lookup completed. Message IDs are meaningful only inside the lifetime and connection context that created them.

Retrying by message ID alone is unsafe because the original request may already have reached the peer. Recovery belongs at the application protocol level: correlate replies, detect disconnects, and use idempotency or transaction tokens when an operation can be repeated.

What to inspect

  • Correlate send, dequeue, cancellation, reply, disconnect, and process-exit events for the same port and message ID.
  • Check whether multiple consumers are racing to receive from one communication endpoint.
  • Preserve payload hashes and high-level request IDs so duplicate execution can be detected.
  • Audit cleanup of message attributes, transferred handles, and section views after loss is reported.
