STATUS_HARDWARE_MEMORY_ERROR

A memory device or path reported data that cannot be corrected safely

Windows Hardware Error Architecture records processor, memory, PCIe, and other hardware failures in structured error records. For a memory error, the record may identify a physical address, bank, module, syndrome, or corrected-versus-uncorrected severity. This status is stronger than an ordinary page fault or virtual-memory allocation failure.

Preserve WHEA events and firmware logs before rebooting or moving modules. An operating-system update can improve reporting, but confirmed recurring uncorrectable errors require hardware, firmware, power, thermal, or platform investigation. Protect data and avoid stress that increases corruption risk.

What to inspect

  • Collect the complete WHEA error record and decode memory-section validity fields.
  • Correlate physical addresses, DIMM location, ECC counts, firmware, temperature, and power events.
  • Run vendor diagnostics and determine whether the failure follows a module, socket, channel, or workload.
