What does NTSTATUS 0xC00A0012 (STATUS_CTX_LICENSE_CLIENT_INVALID) mean?

STATUS_CTX_LICENSE_CLIENT_INVALID

The rejected item is an RDS licensing identity, not a user password

STATUS_CTX_LICENSE_CLIENT_INVALID is returned by the Terminal Services licensing path when the client is not accepted for the session host. It should be investigated as a licensing-state result rather than as a generic authentication failure.

Current RDS deployments use an RD Licensing server to issue and track client access licenses. The deployment license mode, CAL version, license-server activation, and the client or device identity used by the licensing exchange are separate inputs from the user credentials used to sign in.

Useful evidence

  • Record the RD Session Host, licensing mode, configured RD Licensing server, client build, and the full licensing event rather than only the top-level NTSTATUS.
  • Verify that the license server is activated and can issue a CAL compatible with the RD Session Host version and selected Per User or Per Device model.
  • Do not treat a local credential reset as a fix unless the licensing evidence shows that the request never reached the RDS licensing phase.
