STATUS_CTX_LICENSE_EXPIRED
A licensing validity period ended during the RDS connection flow
STATUS_CTX_LICENSE_EXPIRED indicates that the licensing material presented or selected for the Terminal Services connection is no longer valid. It is not the same as an expired user password or a TLS certificate warning from the Remote Desktop client.
For current Per Device RDS CAL deployments, Microsoft documents temporary and permanent CAL lifetimes and renewal behavior. The correct remedy depends on what the RD Licensing server records for the device and whether it can issue or renew a compatible CAL.
Useful evidence
- Collect the client device identity, RD Session Host, licensing mode, license-server events, and the relevant CAL record before removing client-side state.
- Verify RD Licensing server activation, installed CALs, and version compatibility with the session host.
- Keep licensing remediation separate from account troubleshooting; a successful credential validation does not renew an expired CAL by itself.
