STATUS_CTX_CLIENT_LICENSE_NOT_SET

This is a legacy client-licensing state, not a generic RDS CAL diagnosis

STATUS_CTX_CLIENT_LICENSE_NOT_SET originates from older Terminal Services client licensing behavior in which the client presented no configured license number. The wording is historical; it should not be used as evidence that a modern RDS deployment can be repaired by manually editing client license data.

Modern RDS licensing uses an RD Licensing server, licensing mode, and issued client access licenses. A current incident should be correlated with the license-server state and licensing protocol records before treating the old client-side wording as the root cause.

Useful evidence

  • Record the OS and client generation, RD Session Host, licensing mode, and licensing-event details to determine whether the deployment is exercising legacy compatibility behavior.
  • Verify the RD Licensing server activation and installed CALs before modifying client configuration.
  • Avoid cloning or copying legacy client licensing state between machines; duplicate identities can create a different licensing failure later.
