NS_E_FILE_PLAY_FAILED
NS_E_FILE_PLAY_FAILED: the failing boundary
NS_E_FILE_PLAY_FAILED (0xC00D0020) means Unable to play a file. The important boundary is file playback pipeline; do not replace this result with a broader “Windows Media failed” diagnosis.
What this result proves
This code proves that Windows Media could open/select the file path but playback could not be completed. It does not, by itself, prove a codec, permissions, network, device, or media problem outside that boundary. Preserve the first lower-level result when one exists, because later Player or Encoder errors can hide the original cause.
Evidence and focused verification
Record file identity, demux/codec stage, first component hresult and last successful pipeline transition; diagnose that first specific failure. Keep the media object, endpoint, profile, or device identity fixed while changing only that rejected precondition. A successful retest should pass this exact boundary; a different HRESULT from a later stage is new evidence, not recurrence of NS_E_FILE_PLAY_FAILED.
