MF_E_MEDIA_EXTENSION_PACKAGE_LICENSE_INVALID

MF_E_MEDIA_EXTENSION_PACKAGE_LICENSE_INVALID is a package-entitlement failure for a Media Foundation extension. It should be investigated as a license and package-state problem rather than as a media-format negotiation error.

Separate license state from package integrity and service transport

  • Inspect the provider package's Package.Status.LicenseIssue and overall NeedsRemediation state.
  • For Store licensing code that exposes LicenseInformation, record whether the license is active and whether an expiration or revocation condition applies.
  • Verify the signed-in account, Store entitlement, installed package identity, and package version before changing decoder settings.

Microsoft documents LicenseInformation.IsActive as false when a license is missing, expired, or revoked. PackageStatus separately exposes LicenseIssue, allowing license problems to be distinguished from Modified or Tampered package state. That distinction also separates this HRESULT from MF_E_MEDIA_EXTENSION_PACKAGE_INTEGRITY_CHECK_FAILED. Re-registering the same media type or repeatedly resending an app-service request will not restore an invalid package entitlement; diagnose the package's licensing and deployment channel.
