ERROR_GRAPHICS_STALE_MODESET

ERROR_GRAPHICS_STALE_MODESET tells the caller to reacquire the mode set rather than continue using a cached handle or mode iterator. Source and target mode sets can change when the topology changes, another path pins a mode, a monitor is connected, or cofunctional modality is enumerated.

Do not retry the same call with the same object. Return to the VidPN interface, acquire the current source or target mode set, and restart enumeration from the beginning. Any mode-info pointers obtained from the stale set must also be released according to the interface contract; copying their IDs into the new set does not guarantee the same mode still exists.

Events that invalidate cached mode data

  • Monitor arrival, removal, or EDID refresh.
  • Assignment of a replacement source or target mode set.
  • Cofunctional enumeration after another path pins a mode.
  • Topology changes that alter shared bandwidth or cloning constraints.

Microsoft: acquiring a current source mode set

Microsoft: dynamic cofunctional mode enumeration

Linux DRM/KMS: reprobe and atomic mode state
