ERROR_HV_PARTITION_TOO_DEEP

Nested virtualization consumes partition hierarchy depth

ERROR_HV_PARTITION_TOO_DEEP means a new child partition would exceed the hierarchy depth implemented by the hypervisor. In a nested setup, the physical host runs the L0 hypervisor, an L1 guest can host another hypervisor, and that nested hypervisor creates L2 guests. The result is about hierarchy, not the number of ordinary sibling VMs.

Identify which layer is issuing the create-partition hypercall and whether virtualization extensions are exposed to that VM. Avoid recursively enabling virtualization inside an already nested workload that expects another level. Moving the workload to a physical host or removing one virtualization layer addresses the topology; adding memory or virtual processors does not.

Hierarchy information to record

  • L0, L1, and L2 role of the caller and intended child.
  • Whether nested virtualization is enabled for the parent VM.
  • Hypervisor vendor and version at every active layer.
  • Container, emulator, or test framework that attempted to create the extra child.
