STATUS_VID_DUPLICATE_HANDLER means the host virtualization infrastructure already has a handler for the requested VID message class.

VID already has a handler registered for the requested dispatch path, so the second registration collides with an existing host-side client. Trace the first successful registration and its cleanup owner to find duplicate initialization or a retry that occurs before the original handler is removed.

Differentiate it from STATUS_VID_TOO_MANY_HANDLERS: duplicate handler is a collision on one dispatch identity, while too-many-handlers is exhaustion of the overall table or client limit.

What to inspect

Look for repeated initialization of the same kernel-mode or service component after a failed start or restart.
Check whether a cleanup path failed before the component tried to register again.
Record the VM worker process, service restart sequence, and driver load/unload events around the first failure.
