STATUS_VOLMGR_DISK_LAYOUT_INVALID
STATUS_VOLMGR_DISK_LAYOUT_INVALID is a validation failure for the layout as a whole, not a report that a single volume lacks free space. Volume Manager rejected the partition or volume map before applying the requested change because the map does not satisfy the structural rules expected by that operation.
Do not diagnose this from drive letters alone. A drive letter is a mounted volume view; the failing input is the physical disk layout and the relationship between partitions, extents, and any dynamic-disk metadata.
What to compare
- Read the current layout from the same physical disk that the operation targets, then compare its partition style, offsets, lengths, and identifiers with the proposed layout.
- Check whether another tool, installer, recovery utility, or storage-management service changed the disk after the layout was read.
- Do not write a replacement layout merely to clear this status on a boot, recovery, or data disk; preserve an image or backup first.
