STATUS_VIRTDISK_UNSUPPORTED_DISK_SECTOR_SIZE

Host storage geometry is incompatible with the virtual-disk request

STATUS_VIRTDISK_UNSUPPORTED_DISK_SECTOR_SIZE concerns the physical storage beneath the virtual disk, not the guest partition table. VHDX is designed for modern storage characteristics, but a particular provider or operation can still reject a backing disk whose reported sector geometry does not meet its requirements.

The useful comparison is between the logical and physical sector sizes exposed by the host storage path, the image format, and the operation being attempted. A guest format or file-system change cannot by itself correct incompatible host-sector reporting.

What to verify

  • Record the host disk model, driver path, logical sector size, physical sector size, and the VHD or VHDX operation that failed.
  • Compare direct storage with the actual path used by the image, including SAN, Storage Spaces, or file-server layers.
  • Move or recreate the image only after confirming the supported sector policy for the provider and format; do not change guest partitions as a substitute.
