STATUS_SVHDX_WRONG_FILE_TYPE

The selected image cannot be used as a Shared VHDX

STATUS_SVHDX_WRONG_FILE_TYPE is a Shared VHDX compatibility check. The status is specific: multiple VMs sharing a virtual hard disk through this mechanism requires a fixed or dynamic VHDX image. A differencing chain, a legacy VHD, or another file type does not satisfy that contract.

Do not try to make an unsupported image shared by manually editing metadata or attaching it to multiple VMs. For newer guest-cluster designs, Windows documents VHD Set files with the .vhds type, which are managed as a shared virtual-disk model with their own checkpoint metadata.

What to verify

Record the actual virtual-disk format, type, and parent-chain state before changing VM configuration.
Choose the supported shared-disk model for the Windows Server version and guest-cluster requirements.
Keep an unsupported file-type error separate from a reservation conflict on an otherwise supported shared disk.
