IMAPI_E_DATA_STREAM_READ_FAILURE

IMAPI_E_DATA_STREAM_READ_FAILURE is a data-source failure during image construction. AddFile receives an IStream, and AddTree may create and consume streams for source files. If reading that content fails, IMAPI cannot place the file data into the image or its staging area.

Capture the underlying stream and source-file failure

  • Record the image path and original source path for the file being processed.
  • For a custom IStream, log the failing Read HRESULT, current seek position, and requested byte count.
  • For tree imports, check source accessibility and stability while IMAPI enumerates and reads the directory.

This error is different from IMAPI_E_DATA_STREAM_CREATE_FAILURE: here a stream exists but reading it fails. Retrying may appear to work if the source was transiently unavailable, but a reliable fix requires the lower-level read error. Network files, removable storage, or generated streams should be treated as potentially unstable inputs; staging can improve burn throughput but cannot repair a source that cannot be read.
