Redundancy is a failure-tolerance target
Physical-disk redundancy expresses how many physical-disk failures a virtual disk should tolerate before data loss. It is not the same setting as the number of columns or the number of complete data copies. A requested value can be invalid because the chosen layout does not support it or because the pool cannot satisfy that layout at the required width and topology.
What to validate together
- Check the selected Mirror, Parity, or Simple layout and its supported failure tolerance.
- Check available, healthy disks and fault domains rather than relying on total raw capacity.
- Use the provider defaults where a custom redundancy value is not necessary; do not reduce redundancy just to make an undersized pool accept a request without assessing the risk.
