RPC_S_CANNOT_SUPPORT
The RPC peer cannot support the requested operation
RPC_S_CANNOT_SUPPORT is an RPC runtime result indicating that the requested RPC operation is not supported in the current interface, binding, protocol, or peer implementation. A printer can surface this error because printing uses RPC, but the code itself is not printer-specific.
Evidence to preserve
- Record the RPC interface UUID and version, operation or method, binding string, protocol sequence, endpoint, client build, and server build.
- Identify whether the failure occurs while binding, negotiating capabilities, or invoking a specific interface operation.
- Compare the same request against a known-compatible peer before changing unrelated services or system files.
Recovery
Use an operation and interface version supported by the target peer, or update the client/server component so both sides implement the required contract. If a product-specific layer such as the print spooler returns this code, diagnose that product's interface and version compatibility; uninstalling Windows updates, clearing spooler data, or running SFC is not a general remedy for RPC_S_CANNOT_SUPPORT.
A retry is useful only if the endpoint or negotiated capability can actually change. Repeating an unsupported operation against the same peer and binding should be expected to return the same result.
