ERROR_FILE_SYSTEM_VIRTUALIZATION_PROVIDER_UNKNOWN

The virtualization metadata refers to a provider that is not registered or recognized

A virtualization root and its placeholders are meaningful only when Windows can associate them with the provider that understands their backing-store identities and callback contract. This error means that association cannot be resolved. It can follow an incomplete uninstall, copied virtualization metadata, a damaged registration, or opening a root created by a provider that is not installed on the system.

Confirm that the correct provider package or service is installed and that the application is starting virtualization on the original root. Do not attach an unrelated provider merely to clear the error; provider-specific identities are opaque. For migration, recreate the root through the owning provider and repopulate placeholders from the backing store instead of copying internal virtualization metadata between machines.

What to inspect

  • Identify which product originally created the virtualization root.
  • Verify its registration, service, and provider version.
  • Recreate metadata through the owning provider when migrating systems.
