EDEADLK

Deadlock detection in locks and synchronization

On Solaris, EDEADLK is errno value 45. The base message is Deadlock condition., but the useful diagnostic context is narrower than the short message: Solaris detected or avoided a deadlock in locking or synchronization.

Use the Solaris-specific errno table first, then compare with POSIX only for portable behavior. Some Solaris values share names with other UNIX systems but have different numbers or more specific historical meanings.

What to check

  • Record the lock type: fcntl record lock, mutex, semaphore, condition variable, or reader/writer lock.
  • Inspect lock ordering and ownership rather than increasing timeout values.
  • Compare with EDEADLOCK, which is an older Solaris alias-style spelling for file-locking deadlock reports.
