ERROR_REDIR_PAUSED

Windows network redirection makes remote resources appear as local devices. The redirector architecture includes a user-mode network provider for connection management and a kernel-mode redirector for remote file operations. A paused redirected device is therefore a client/resource-state issue, not necessarily evidence that the remote server is unreachable.

Identify the redirected local name and the remote resource behind it. For a disk mapping, direct UNC access can show whether the share remains usable independently of the local device state. For a printer mapping, keep the print-queue state separate from SMB file-share assumptions.

Inspect the redirected object

  • Record the local device name, remote resource, resource type, and provider.
  • Test the remote resource without the local redirection when the resource type permits it.
  • Check whether the pause was deliberate administrative state or a provider transition.
  • Do not collapse disk and printer redirection into one diagnosis; the same Win32 code can describe either.
