ERROR_DS_NOT_INSTALLED

Domain controller installation stopped before AD DS reached an installed state

Modern AD DS promotion performs prerequisite discovery, forest and domain preparation checks, schema-version validation, database creation or replication, SYSVOL setup, and final service configuration. A failure reported with this code is the outer installation result; the stage that actually failed is normally earlier in the deployment log.

Do not diagnose this page as a generic request to reinstall the server. Microsoft recommends working backward from the first relevant error in Dcpromoui.log and Dcpromo.log, using ADPrep logs only when schema or forest preparation is implicated. DNS, credentials, replication, schema readiness, and unavailable critical DCs can all stop promotion at different stages, so the first lower-level status is more useful than the final wrapper code.

What to inspect

  • Find the earliest failing promotion phase in the deployment logs.
  • Check DirectoryServices-Deployment events when the promotion log ends without enough detail.
  • Run prerequisite and replication checks again after fixing the specific lower-level cause.
