ERROR_DS_NOT_ON_BACKLINK

The requested linked-attribute operation does not apply to this backlink

Active Directory linked attributes are defined as forward-link/backlink pairs. MS-ADTS specifies that an even linkID represents the forward link and the corresponding odd linkID represents the backlink. The directory calculates backlink values from forward-link values across the forest; clients generally modify the forward direction, not the computed reverse view.

Identify the attributeSchema object for the failing attribute and inspect linkID. Then locate the corresponding forward link and change the source objects that own those values. For example, modifying a computed membership backlink is conceptually different from modifying the forward membership relation. Broad ACL changes do not turn a system-calculated backlink into a normal writable attribute.

What to inspect

  • Read linkID and determine whether the attribute is a forward link or backlink.
  • Identify the corresponding paired linked attribute.
  • Apply the change to the owning forward-link values through the supported operation.
