The Domain Naming Master path required by the DNS partition operation failed
Application directory partitions have forest directory metadata, including a crossRef object. MS-DNSP initialization records the Domain Naming Master FSMO owner, and DNS partition deletion explicitly connects to that FSMO owner to delete the partition cross-reference. Some partition lifecycle operations therefore depend on more than the local DNS service and local AD replica.
Identify the current Domain Naming Master and verify that the target DC can contact it and perform the required directory operation. Check AD DS and FSMO health before retrying the DNS command. Moving the DNS management request to another arbitrary server is not guaranteed to help if the forest-wide role owner itself is unavailable or the directory operation cannot reach it.
What to inspect
- Determine the current Domain Naming Master FSMO role owner.
- Verify directory connectivity and service health between the DNS server and that role owner.
- Review recent FSMO transfer, seizure, or DC retirement events before repeating partition create or delete work.
