What does HRESULT 0x00042578 (VDS_S_REMOUNT_FAILED) mean?

VDS_S_REMOUNT_FAILED

This warning describes the later half of the flag-transition cycle. Setting HIDDEN or READONLY can force VDS to dismount and then remount the volume. VDS_S_REMOUNT_FAILED means the flag operation progressed past the dismount boundary but VDS could not restore the mounted state afterward. The resulting volume may therefore have new flags and a different accessibility state.

Why this state matters

The correct response is state reconciliation, not immediate repetition of SetFlags. Query current flags, mount/offline status, and access paths. IVdsVolumeMF::Mount is the documented mount operation, while a permanently dismounted volume follows a different lifecycle in which adding an access path can bring it online.
