CO_E_RUNAS_CREATEPROCESS_FAILURE

CO_E_RUNAS_CREATEPROCESS_FAILURE is the RunAs-specific form of local-server launch failure. COM has selected a server configured to run under a particular identity, but it cannot create the process in that configuration. This is broader than a bad password: process creation can also fail after authentication succeeds.

Why it differs from ordinary launch failure

The AppID RunAs setting changes how COM launches a non-service server. COM uses the configured account to create a logon session and starts the server within that identity. A service-hosted COM server is different: the RunAs value is not used for servers configured through LocalService.

What to examine

Verify the CLSID-to-AppID mapping, the RunAs value, and the executable registration as one activation chain.
Check that the configured identity can use the registered executable and any startup resources it requires, rather than testing only under an administrator account.
Distinguish this failure from CO_E_RUNAS_LOGON_FAILURE: the latter indicates that COM could not establish the configured logon session.
