DBG_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
The exception was passed back to the debuggee
For an EXCEPTION_DEBUG_EVENT, this continuation value tells Windows that the debugger did not consume the exception. On a first-chance event, structured exception handling continues in the target so an application or runtime handler can process it. If a second-chance exception remains unhandled, the process is normally terminated.
This is the correct response for most exceptions that belong to the application rather than to the debugger. It must not be used as a generic acknowledgement without checking the event type and first-chance flag.
What to inspect
- Read the first-chance indicator and original exception code before deciding.
- Pass through application exceptions unless the debugger intentionally implements the relevant handling.
- Collect a dump before returning an unhandled second-chance exception when analysis is required.
- Do not use this status for non-exception events as a substitute for a clear event-handling policy.
