VSS_E_MAXIMUM_NUMBER_OF_VOLUMES_REACHED means that the current shadow copy operation already contains as many volumes as VSS permits in a single snapshot set. Microsoft documents a maximum of 64 shadow-copied volumes in one set.
What to do
- Split the backup into multiple snapshot sets when the requested volume count exceeds the limit.
- Review whether all selected volumes are required for application consistency.
- Do not add volumes after the limit is reached and assume that the provider will include them implicitly.
