VDS_E_NOT_AN_UNALLOCATED_DISK means that the operation requires a fully unallocated disk, but VDS detected existing partitions, volumes, or allocation metadata. This differs from merely having some free space: the whole disk must meet the blank-disk precondition.
What to check
- Inspect all partitions and volumes on the selected disk, including hidden or provider-managed entries.
- Confirm that the workflow really requires a blank disk rather than an available unallocated extent on an existing disk.
- Do not remove existing structures until the disk identity, data ownership, backup, and recovery consequences are explicitly confirmed.
