VDS_E_CLUSTER_SIZE_TOO_BIG

VDS_E_CLUSTER_SIZE_TOO_BIG is a formatting-parameter error for the allocation-unit size. IVdsVolumeMF::Format receives the size in bytes through dwUnitAllocationSize; the documentation notes a usual range of 512 through 65536 bytes and points to file-system-specific limits.

Cluster size is not sector size

The value controls file-system allocation units. It should not be derived from a disk’s logical or physical sector size by simply copying that number into the VDS format request. A requested cluster size can be too large for the chosen file system or volume even when the storage device itself reports healthy sector geometry.

What to verify

Log dwUnitAllocationSize in bytes and the exact VDS_FILE_SYSTEM_TYPE passed to Format.
Prefer the file-system default when the application has no documented workload requirement for a custom allocation unit.
Do not change partition layout in response to this code until the format parameters themselves have been checked.
