VDS_E_PACK_ONLINE
Pack status is a management state, not a statement that every disk is healthy. VDS defines online packs as available for configuration and use, while offline packs are unavailable. Certain pack-level transformations require the source or target to be offline so configuration ownership and disk-group metadata cannot change underneath the operation. This HRESULT is the explicit state gate for that requirement.
Why this state matters
Diagnostics should identify which pack the method is acting on and why the chosen operation requires an offline state. Taking a volume offline or deleting its drive letter is not equivalent to taking the pack offline. Likewise, a pack can still contain disks and volumes while offline. Preserve the pack status and operation name before attempting any state transition.
Diagnostic focus
- Query the current pack properties and log its object ID and status at the moment of failure.
- Distinguish pack state from volume online state, file-system mount state, and individual disk offline reasons.
- Confirm the documented precondition of the exact VDS method before changing pack availability.
- After any supported offline transition, reacquire pack properties rather than assuming the previous COM object reflects the new state.
