VDS_E_INVALID_MEMBER_ORDER
VDS_INPUT_DISK.memberIdx is a zero-based member index. Microsoft documents an important consistency rule: either specify a member index for all input disks or specify it for none. Disks sharing the same member index are consumed in array order. This means member order is part of the request structure and cannot be reconstructed safely from disk GUIDs after the fact.
Why this state matters
The error is distinct from an invalid member count. A request can contain the correct number of members but number them with a gap, duplicate the wrong position, or mix explicit and default indexing. Preserve the original input array and compare it with the intended plex geometry before retrying; automatically renumbering records can change which extents form a member.
Diagnostic focus
- Log every input array position together with
diskId,plexId, andmemberIdx. - Confirm explicit member indexes are used for all input disks or for none of them.
- Check for gaps and ordering changes introduced by filtering failed or unavailable disks.
- Do not sort the array by device name after assigning member indexes; VDS uses array order for disks with the same index.
