VDS_E_VOLUME_DISK_COUNT_MAX_EXCEEDED
VDS imposes a documented upper bound on the input array used by IVdsPack2::CreateVolume2: no more than 32 disks may participate in one volume. The limit applies to the volume topology, not to the total number of disks in the pack. A pack can contain many disks while one create or extend design exceeds the per-volume disk boundary.
Why this state matters
This status is therefore different from VDS_E_CONFIG_LIMIT, which concerns capacity of the Logical Disk Manager configuration database. For disk-count overflow, the useful evidence is the set of unique contributing disk IDs after deduplication and the intended volume type. Splitting the storage design may be required; increasing free space on the same disks does not change the count limit.
Diagnostic focus
- Count unique disk IDs in the proposed volume, not array entries or extents.
- Compare the result with the documented 32-disk input limit for
CreateVolume2. - Check for duplicate disk records before concluding the intended topology truly needs that many disks.
- Distinguish the per-volume disk limit from pack-wide LDM configuration capacity and from available free space.
