VDS_E_INVALID_PARTITION_LAYOUT
This HRESULT concerns the layout as a whole. A partition table is an ordered set of ranges plus style-specific metadata; valid offsets and sizes can still form an invalid map when entries overlap, violate reserved regions, or conflict with the selected partitioning model. VDS returns partition properties with style, flags, number, offset, size, and MBR/GPT-specific details precisely because validation needs the complete structure.
Why this state matters
Dump every partition in start-offset order and include free/unusable extents. On GPT media, also account for primary and backup GPT structures and the usable-LBA range defined by the headers. Do not repair a single partition based only on its name or ordinal until the global geometry is understood.
Diagnostic focus
- Enumerate the entire partition map and sort entries by byte offset.
- Check overlaps, gaps used by metadata, disk boundaries, and style-specific reserved regions.
- For GPT, compare partition ranges with the first/last usable LBA and backup GPT placement.
- Preserve the original table before applying a tool that automatically rewrites or normalizes the layout.
